HSBC in Malaysia
HSBC’s presence in Malaysia dates back to 1884 when the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited established its first office in the country, on the island of Penang, with permission to issue currency notes. In 1959 it bought the Mercantile Bank, which started operations in Malaysia in 1860.
HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad was locally incorporated in 1984 and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (a company under the HSBC Group). In 2007, HSBC Bank Malaysia was the first locally incorporated foreign bank to be awarded an Islamic banking subsidiary licence in Malaysia, and HSBC Amanah Malaysia Berhad, a full-fledged Islamic bank wholly-owned by HSBC Bank Malaysia, commenced operation in August 2008.
HSBC has also received several accolades in the Euromony Market Leaders 2022 for Diversity and Inclusion, Environmental and Social Governance and Corporate Social Responsibility. The bank was also awarded Digital Bank of the Year by The Asset Triple A Digital Awards 2022.
